About

Who We Are

Penobscot Fly Fishers, locally founded in 1997, is a family-oriented fly fishing  club located in the Bangor, Maine area.  It is a  501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization that promotes outdoor fishing activities and conservation of our fisheries to all who enjoy recreation in the magnificent state of Maine.  Also, the club is an affiliate of the Federation of Fly Fishers.

Why Join?

Please consider joining the Penobscot Fly Fishers if:

- you want to learn about or share your knowledge of fly fishing;

- you like helping others, especially instructing our youth to tie flies, cast a fly rod, or learn more about this sport;

- you want to be part of a group that enjoys the outdoors and each other’s company.

Educate, Conserve…..Fish!

We offer you the opportunity to both socialize and develop lifelong friendships with like-minded individuals.  Yes, we explain and instruct, we listen and learn, and importantly we fish!

Penobscot Fly Fishers club activities/events, which always have an educational aspect, are an important part of who we are and what we do.  Members of all different skill levels  are always willing to share their knowledge and experience.

Our Events Committee plans numerous fishing outings each year.  All outings are open to members and guests, and often participants have the opportunity to fish on water they haven’t visited before.

The Penobscot Fly Fishers also conducts several fly tying classes throughout the year for beginners and advanced tyers.  Some of the classes are taught by our talented club members, while others have been taught by world-class professionals like Don Bastian, Joe Calcavecchia, Ed Muzeroll, and Dave Klausmeyer.

Meetings

Our monthly meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month from September through June at the Penobscot County Conservation Association clubhouse located at 570 North Main Street in Brewer, Maine.  A fly-fishing related demonstration begins at 5:00 PM, which has included fly tying, fly casting, knot tying, reel care, and line maintenance.

At 6:00 PM, a family-style dinner is available for purchase.  Afterwards we conduct our business meeting and have a guest speaker.  Our speakers have presented information about a broad array of subjects, including fisheries, Penobscot River restoration, fly rod building, fly fishing equipment, and GPS/navigation.

All monthly meetings are open to the public.  Members are encouraged to bring guests with them.

Finally

The Penobscot Fly Fishers is many things to many people.  The constant theme is that we have fun, work and play well together, and enjoy sharing our passion for the sport we love–fly fishing.
